A very impressive wine for a vintage considered (however unfairly) inferior to '04 and '06; the super elegant, supple and harmonious blend of black fruits, oak and tannins push all the right buttons. "A perfumed, floral and slightly meaty shiraz whose cedary fragrance of dark plums, blueberries, blackcurrant, vanilla and chocolate precede a long, tightly knit and focused shiraz that just lacks the brightness and vitality of the best years. It offers deep, dark berry flavours, which despite a balanced spice of fine-grained tannin, just breaks up a fraction at the finish."

The nose shows complex aromas of dark berry fruits, mocha and chocolate. These aromas lead to a luscious palate, layered with concentrated black fruit flavours and hints of spice. Soft and ripe tannins combine with subtle oak notes giving the wine great length and depth.

There's a good clip of toasty clove oak with lush black and red fruits, a spicy sauciness and licorice/aniseed richness. Then a big chewy mouthful of flavour with smooth but loose knit grainy tannins that coat the mouth - it really pushes through and keeps on going. Full but not all hot and heavy like so many - certainly delicious. If you like a good Barossa shiraz then it's time to dip your bucket into the old Blackwell once again.
